Folks, there may not be a viable recording for this session... due to very very very low audio on the playback. I'm going to tinker around a bit with it but we may need to recreate the teaching portion of the session.
Here's the brief recap of what we covered:
Susie's Part:
- Reminder that the Global Developer Conference is coming up next month, May 3-5th in San Jose, CA. Several community members (such as Max and Ken), SugarCRM Online team employees (such as Andy, Susie, and Julian), and partners will be giving presentations during the two days. Saturday is the "fun" day with the Cat's Hill Classic Bike race. For more information on the schedule, list of topics and speakers, and a link to register, check out the conference web page.
- The Yahoo!-Sugar Coding Contest has started. The contest runs the month of April and there are three fairly large ($1000/each) prizes, one each for Dashlets, Modules, and the best use of YUI within Sugar. The contest page has additional details. Please note that the contest is open to U.S. residents only, but we have a discussion thread going about possibly doing something else in parallel for our international friends.
Max Blackmer's Part:
- Max showed everyone how to change the labels of a module using Studio. He used the example of taking an existing module ("Bugs") to change the name everywhere to "Master Ticket". By using Studio, the modifications are upgrade-safe since they are stored separate from the base Sugar files.
- Max showed everyone how to create a custom field, then add that field to a search form, a detail view, and an edit form.
- We uncovered a bug during the demo; the Portal module should not be exposed in Studio as one of the choices to edit. Andy filed a bug for this.
Feedback from Participants:
Question: Comments on the presentation)
(Question: what future topics would you like to see)
- Maybe not concentrate on doing a find/replace for each one. Other than that, nicely done.
- Great presentation and organization of materials. I learned a couple of things about customization that I had missed in my "seat of the pants" learning. But not enough "meat", especially with time remaining. I'm sure that Max knows of some "back door" ways of tweaking the system that would have been useful. See you at the conference!!
- A future topic I'd like to see for a new SugarPro customer is the concept/best practices on Teams.
- Session about subpanels, widgets and popups would be great. Session about moving Sugar from one platform (MS for example) to another as well as from one version to another.
