Installation advice needed

Trying to install 6.3.1 of SugarCRM with MSSQL stack. It starts to install MS SQL server and then I get error -

Path to mssql_settings.conf is invalid, file may be corrupt or you may not have write access,

but this is a file that it creates.and it does have write access. Any thoughts? I have tried a fresh download as well thinking that download may have been corrupt - no difference.

This is the exact error I get:

To proceed, make sure that the log file path is valid, writable, and available, and then run SQL Server Setup again.

Just an idea to try.
Download MS SQL Server Express from Microsoft, install it.
Then run the Sugar installer and try to skip MS SQL Server Express install , but point Sugar to use the existing MS SQL Express that you already installed.
Good luck and let us know if it works.
Also - what OS and version are you running, 7, Vista, 2003, 2008, 2008R2,... ?

Thanks for the idea. There are 2 flavours - 1) SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and 2) SQL Server Express Database w/tools.

I tried 2) and that didn't talk to Sugarcrm. should I have installed 1?

Microsoft makes it more complicated than it has to be, methinks.

What version of windows operating system are you running... xp, Vista, 7, Server 2003, Server 2008 ?

The Microsoft database server product seems to be picky about something, and doesnt want to install on your machine - for some reason I don't know - without some fiddling.

I recommend you get the Sugar+MySQL fast stack. It should "just work" - (to borrow a line from Apple).

My only gripe with that is the backup routine. Last time I tried I had much headache with Restore. But, what the hell if it works.. and foot print is smaller. Thanks.

Do you mean that MySQL is not as easy to backup as microsoft sql server express - on your machine ?

I never quite figured out how to restore. Backing up was not too much of a problem. I am giving it a go tonight,
