    Default Limitations of Community Edition

    Hi Everyone,

I'm desperately trying to find a document detailing the limitations of community edition vs. the other editions.

The "Editions" page seems not to include community edition.

You get the feeling sugar doesn't want people to use the OS version. Is that correct? If yes, then why they made it OS in the first place?

    Thanks for help.

There are no limitations. The only difference is that Pro/Ent have more features and they are not licensed under GPL3. Meaning you can not change it and then sell/distribute it (what you could do with the CE version provided you stick with the regulations outlined in the license agreement).

But in general I think it's high time to clarify the differences between Open Source, the license (GPL3 or similar) and free of charge. These three things do not mean the same. Open Source just means that the source code is accessible but the concept doesn't say anything about patents or trademarks or the lack thereof.

The varous licenses clarify this fuzzy concept a bit and by accepting such a license you are bound to its regulatiions. But even there usually nothing is said about not demanding a price for the piece of work you are distributing.

The SugarCRM CE version (currently) is Open Source, under GPL3 AND free of charge.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not that interested in licensing background and how the different GPLs differ. Basically i want to know which features are available for free (as in beer :-)) and which have to be paid for.

i E. http://www.zarafaserver.de/?q=en/content/community-0 clearly states that zarafa's community edition has no full outlook support. If you want that (or support) you buy.

So what's the deal on sugar? Shouldn't this be a pretty basic question? What features are lacking on on community edition - or to put it in a positive context, whcih additional features do the paid editions have.

    Hello jge,

Have you seen the following link? It shows the cost breakdown and features included with Express, Pro and Ent.

The difference between the Express and the free version of Sugar is the limit on users (there would be no limit on users), price (you will need to either host yourself or find another hosting provider), support and storage, and the plugin for word, excel, word.

Depending on your needs, there are a few other options available as well. Please feel free to contact Ray Stoeckicht at rays@intelestream.net or 888-435-2221 for more information.

Anything is possible. However, you would either have to code those features yourself (or pay someone to do it for you) or use a suitable 3rd party alternative from sugarforge.org or sugarexchange.com.

There is nothing in the licensing that keeps you from mimicking the functionality from Pro/Ent within CE.

As for the Outlook connector, yes, there are some for CE. The two that I like most are GrinMark Office Plugin and Kinamu Outlook connector. Both are available on sugarforge.org
