    Default sell Our own Module

    Hello,

I would like to ask you for help as we did a quite huge module about processes and product catalog and we would like not to make it free

One company told us it must be free with sugar? Is it right? We did it for one company and we want to sign licence for this module not for suagr crm.

Is it possible we spent our money and now the only thing we can do is put our names in code and we have to distribute it freely?

    Thank you for help

    Hi

Any modules developed using SugarCRM will come under GPL. So you cannot sell it. But you can charge for the module customizations you do.

OR contact longreach. He is good in this GPL stuff.

    BS.
GPL doesn't say anything about not charging for developments under GPL. Look into Sugar Exchange and you will see plenty of add ons that have a price. You have to provide the source code though.

Did you develop it for Sugar Community Edition (GPL)?

You can sell it as you like but once requested by someone you need to give your codes to him/her.

This module will run on all versions.

I can give code to the client but i do not want him to sell it futher as it was our work.

I do not really understand the connection of suagr GPL3 and custom modules:

From that what some of you told i can ask every one from sugar exchange to give me the code nevertheless the price listed?

I have 3 potential clients so what if they meet each other and say ok you buy this module and share with us while i spent 1000 euro for developing it

You need to be careful about the codes for CE. Sugar GPLv3 says all modules that work on Sugar CE need to be licensed under GPL v3.

You can not prohibit your client from re-selling your codes if they are for CE (GPL). That is allowed under GPL.

And yes, you can ask all of developers who wrote codes for GPL to give them to you for free.

Actually, you can't. You can write your own code that falls under the GPL 3 for your own business's use and if you don't redistribute it (e.g. sell it) by no means are you ever required to release the code. This is meant to protect trade secrets, etc.

So, you can request GPL code all you want from someone who has GPL code but they do not have to release it to you unless they sell/redistribute that code/product to you.

    Hi

He is asking the question about the developers who re-distribute the codes on Sugar Exchange. So all of them need to make them available once requested.

Right, that's not true though. If they sell them on SugarExchange they only need to provide the code to those they sell them to. Of course, the recipient can then redistribute the code at that point as provided by the GPL as long as they follow the copyright rules.

You can't go around and just request the code from every provider on SugarExchange willy nilly. The GPL does not specify that at all.

    From the GPLv3 FAQ
    http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq....cePostedPublic

Does the GPL require that source code of modified versions be posted to the public? The GPL does not require you to release your modified version, or any part of it. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.
But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.
Thus, the GPL gives permission to release the modified program in certain ways, and not in other ways; but the decision of whether to release it is up to you.

If I know someone has a copy of a GPL-covered program, can I demand he give me a copy? No. The GPL gives him permission to make and redistribute copies of the program if he chooses to do so. He also has the right not to redistribute the program, if that is what he chooses.
