Help needed - making a custom field in contacts

hi all,

im pretty new in sugar,yet my supervisor has told me to help develop the sugar as admin. oh the joy.
so i have been trying to add a new field to the contact, field such as first name/last name/phone, those field that is filled by text. the way i attempt to do it is I go to studio-contact-fields-add field. then I make one, filled the type as text field, and save it. however, the field doesnt appear,neither when i am creating a new contact or advanced searching. is it because i am using a test server?

Hi randypif,

After creation of text field u need to deploy that.
for that go to admin->stdio->contacts->layouts
after that select edit view and drag and drop the custom create file where u need then save and deploy...
and refresh the crm and go to u r contacts and we can find the changes
