Smile 5.0 CE as on-demand service

We are working with hosting services and want to set up Sugar 5.0 as an on-demand service in our local area. Are there specifics on how this is best done?
Can 5.0 be set up to share files but have different databases or even run in one database.

Happy new year to you all at Sugar and in the community

I believe it's best to run each Sugar instance separately, with its own database. Others with more experience in this area can chime in with their recommendations.

    Hi Susie,

An instance (folder, database) per user is the common solution, yes. But it was announced that 5.0 has a new "multi-instance on demand architecture." Any idea what this means? Or where we can get more information?

    Exactly my question too Roblaus

I have worked with both NetSuite and Salesforce, where you have a "true" on damand structure. This means that all is in one database and is seperated with a customer ID. This also means that all customers can have their software updated at one time. This is what I would expect from an on-demand setup.

If Each customer has their own database or/and own application, updating will be an issue, when many customers are set up.

How are Sugar maintaing this in their on-demand services

Are there any difference in this aspect with the PRO and Enterprise versions.

Regards and a happy new year to all

I put this question up recently and Rolblauch also asked for some info on this.

Is it not possible to get some sort of response to this. We are currently preparing such a setup and have not been able to find any documentation on how Sugar is treating this.

Does anyone in the forum have this kind of information?

    Best regards

Hi all, Sugar On-Demand is available for Sugar Professional and Enterprise customers.

The On-Demand multi-instance architecture itself is discussed on our roadmap page where you'll also find a webcast and white paper.

If you have further questions after checking this out you may want to contact our Sales team for more information.

Is this on-demand architecture just for Sugar themselves to use for their on-demand service or is it something that OEM providers can use to service their on-demand clients?

The multi-instance technology/setup we refer to has been created out of interenal efforts as we have built out our updated on-demand infrastructure.

Without going into too much detail here multi-instance simply means many instances running in a shared environment at the application level while each maintaining their own databases. This allows for the benefits of mutli-tennant while giving each instance greater control over their setup. Greater control is needed with an open source product such as ours. Our customers expect to be able to customize their instances how they see fit wether its via studio or code level customzations, as well as opting out of upgrades if they choose to do so.

There are two key items with our 5.1 release that will be made available to our customer, partner, and community base.

The first is the introduction of what we are refering to as "templating" at the instance file level. This will allow two or more different instances that are running the same version/flavor of Sugar to share all commonly used files.

Imagine installing two seperate side-by-side Sugar Pro 5.0b instances. Once installed, except for their config.php file and cache, custom folders they are exactly the same at the application file level. Once an instance starts to become customized through studio those changes are written to the instances "local" cache/custom directories while the rest of the app is used from the shared template location.

The second thing coming with the 5.1 release is the release of what we are refering to internally as Sugar Data Center Edition 1.0. This product will come in two flavors. One geared towards our partner community wishing to build out and host their own Sugar On-Demand offering, the other geared towards large multi-national enterprises that are running very large installations and possible multiple installations across several divisions.

For those partners who are either already hosting Sugar themselves, or looking to start and would like to find out more information may contact our channels team at partnerships at sugarcrm.com.
