Attachments stopped working. "insufficient data for image"

We have been attaching pdf files to sugar for months now and have never had a problem.
Now when you try to open an attachment, you get an error from adobe reader saying "insufficient data for image", and voila, there is nothing there on the page.

We're running 5.1.0b CE on a webhost.

Anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix?
