Automating Things Via Cron Jobs

Here is a question for other OS users; has anyone created a script to be run by cron for
doing some basic workflow actions like scheduling calls, sending emails etc....

Personally, I will be building a script that each nite looks for closed opportunities and schedules 3 calls for that account, a second script that looks for opportunity closes every 5 minutes and sends several emails when an opp closes.

Has anyone done this? Is the best approach SOAP or will I have to use SugarPHP?

Any feedback before I start would be great!
