Checking if data entered is a duplicate

Hi, I've been using Sugar and I really like it, so first of all, congrats to the dev team.

My question is this, I want to know if there is a way to tell sugar to check if a value entered in a custom field already exists and if so, ask if one really wants to create a new record with that duplicate value (or block it completely).

For example, companies where I live have a unique ID. So, if someone was creating a record for that company thinking its not on the database, after placing the data and submiting it Sugar would prompt that the ID is already being used and ask to try again or something.

I believe there is no way to do that without code implementation.
How is your php and SugarCRM development?

I've modified some lines of code in SugarCRM and in the process learned some PHP, so if you can help me a little I can try to make it work out.
