Converting leads to contacts - customs fields

I am testing Version 5.0.0beta2 (Build 2562).
For our marina and real estate sales application, I have created four custom fields to allow us to record information vital to our sales effort. I can't find any way to get those custom fields to carry over when I convert Leads to Contacts. This is a deal killer for me, my sales people will not use Sugar without this. Is there any solution on the horizon?
I have read some suggestions that using the same field name will work but I cannot get that to work.

Create the custom fields in the contacts module and then edit the ConvertLead files.
