Creating a duplicate installation of Sugar

I would like to create a duplicate installation of my Sugar 4.2a crm to test customizations on etc...
I have run into countless problems copying the files to a new directory and trying to change the config.php file
to point to a new database created by running a backup (mysqldump) of my primary database. When I try to access the
duplicate I just get a blank screen no errors nothing. What needs to be changed? Or is there a better faster way of doing this?

that should work fine. I've done this numerous times when my local copy gets out of sync by changing minor things on our production server.

Where are you copying the files? Different machine?
