Thanks,
Fields are there, just not in layout.
Problem solved.
Wondering if there is a quick way to rebuild the custom fields? We have, for example, added say 50 custom fields and changed the layout completely of a lot of pages and having to redo these after an upgrade seems tedious. I have our 3.5 site up along with the 4.0 version of the site. I tried copying the html files (editview.html) from the 3.5 to the 4.0 and it made the layout correct, but did not put back the custom fields. Is there a quicker way to do this?
Did you use Admin -> Repair -> Upgrade Custom Labels?

In 4.0, we had an issue were custom fields got clobbered in the layout after an upgrade to 4.0. The fields and the data were still defined in the system, but your layout got replaced with the 4.0 default layout. You could reapply all of your fields using Studio, but that is not very desireable with 50+ custom fields.Originally Posted by jeffreyvsmith
In 4.0.1, we fixed this issue. So if you upgrade to 4.0.1 from 3.5.1 (you can go directly to 4.0.1 from 3.5.1; here's the upgrade file you need http://www.sugarforge.org/frs/downlo...1_to_4.0.1.zip), your custom field layouts will not be lost.
So the simplest path at this point is to redo your upgrade from 3.5.1 to 4.0.1.
You should be all good to go at this point.

Thanks for the replies!!!
I have managed to lose custom fields in going from 4.01e to 4.2.0 to 4.2.0a. Is there an easy fix for this, other than reapplying the fields? Fortunately, there are only 3 or 4, but my understanding is that this isn't supposed to happen any more.
Thanks,
Ken
I have managed to lose custom field names without upgrading. I did not install any modules, or upgrade any versions. This is not good as I am just setting the system up to show the Directors and my layouts are half empty.
Why are you not able to edit the field names once a custom field has been made, this would make fixing somewhat easier?
