Customizing email templates using e.g. smarty

We are planning to move from xrms to SugarCRM. For xrms we implemented a way to customize email templates using smarty tags. E.g. we can do something like this:

Sehr geehrte<tpl:if $gender != "f">r</tpl:if> <tpl:$salutation> <tpl:$last_name>

to customize a salutation in German.

Is something like this possible in SugarCRM? How would this be achieved?
