Email setup

I have recently installed SugarCRM 3.5.1b. I upgraded to d. I'm trying to get my emails to send out notifications, but I keep getting this error message: "Error Sending email"

I am using SMTP to my server on port 25 without authentication. What can I look at to debug?

Update: I was able to go into the class "class.phpmailer.php" and force the use of php mail. Then the mail was sent. I still want to use smtp though. I also went into the "class.smtp.php" to confirm that a valid resource was set up for the connection (it was).

Any ideas of what else to look for?

One more update:

With the modification (above) forcing php mail, I'm able to send email from the "compose email" option, but project tasks are still not being emailed out.

Any ideas?
