email synchronize option- what does it do?

Hello,

I am getting acquainted with Sugar as we try to decide to move from Goldmine

Today I started testing the Email system and had the bright idea of right clicking on my email account to see what options there were there, I found one that said synchronize so I pressed it with the idea that would synchronize my server mail with my Sugarcrm database, I had 114 emails on my server and after synchronizing they are no longer on the server, nor can I find them in Sugarcrm, where are they?, can I get them back?, what exactly did Sugarcrm synchronize option did?, I could not find any information on any of the published manuals of V5.1 nor the new 5.2 ( I am still running 5.1 at this point)
