    Talking Gmail Email Module

This having a team thing is starting to pay off, we have a cool module but I'm not sure there is a niche for it big enough to warrant spending the time it's going to take to finish it. Look at the image below. Answer this thread if this is a module that you would want. It replaces the EMail module with a module that does the same basic function but uses GMail instead. It's still deep in alpha but as you see we have a working module and it shows email and html email just fine. Can;t do anything else yet but thats a start.

    Let me know

    thanks

Nicely done! This would be really useful as a per-user optional alternative.

GMail is awesome. I think I have all the functions of GMail reproduced in the module so all I have left is to be able to assign mail to objects. I am going to need beta testers with a gmail account (I can get you one) and a test setup of SugarCRM.

I also have to decide if I am going to save the Email locally or just as the link to the GMail copy and let them do the work. I am leaning toward the saving the link idea.

I also have a problem as gmail doesn't give me the email addresses of the senders until the DetailView. The ListView just gives me the plain names, I'll have to think about that for a while.

This is absolutely something we'd pay for! The main thing I'd want to see is that Gmail's AJAX-style architecture maintains its speed advantage when wrapped in Sugar. Gmail by itself is as fast as a desktop app, but the email module in Sugar OnDemand takes 10-16 seconds just to display a list of emails.

Right now I'm re-evaluating our decision to go with SugarCRM, and this would be a huge factor in favor of staying.

I've got a gmail account and a couple test sugar instances.
I'd be glad to help out beta testing.

This would be great except they don't allow you to access the ajax stuff outside of their website. I can only gather mail and issue commands via curl and openssl. Google does not publish a API for GMail so access to it is limited at best. I have hit a wall trying to read and understand GMail threads (there is no docs for this so it's alot of guesswork and testing) and then be able to display them.

Right now the reality is that I have alot of irons in the fire and need to prioritize and I'm not sure there is a big enough base of insterested users to bump it up the list in the near term, and it is too much work to go in the open source bin.

I'll post a video on my website tonight showing how far along it is and maybe we can stir up enough interest to get some help coding and maybe some help financing the project.
