How do I update duplicates during a contact import?

I'd like to merge duplicate contact information from various sources into a single place, like SugarCRM. I know merging is possible, but only in cases where the 'magic' SugarCRM key is tied to the records.

Can I update existing records during an import, based on a field like 'email address'?

I'm disappointed this doesn't come 'out of the box', but it seems like that's the case with all the competitors too...

Yes you can create and update during record import. you should read the admin manual for more information. the import is better than you currently suppose.

Yes you are right.
It is not going to work.
It will only update the records by id.

You do need to read the manual ... also ... experiment with this ... look at the option under "show advanced options" in the import routine.

there, you'll find the option to use the email address as an index for duplication checking
