installation woes v4.0.1.a

I am installing a new instance of SugarCRM v4.0.1a to a shared services web server at lunarpages.com .
I changed the permissions on the files (as listed in the doc) - went to sitename/sugar/ (my instance) and it barfs with
a general 500 error . I can't see the server error logs, but I've got a trouble ticket into LP's support desk.

I wanna assume there is some issue with the tmp directory and where it should point to, but I'm grasping at straws here.

any comments on where I should begin looking?

OK - I talked with LP support - and they said that the file permissions need to be at 755 for most things, then 644 for the files. They use secure php - so a blowout to 777 won't work for me. I'm gonna review the file permissions again and get back to this thread later with the results. But - anyone got a comment as to why I got a general 500 error?

yup - it was the permissions.
set em all to 755 and 644 - problem went away and the installation wizard is running.
