Intergrate sugarCRM with live database

I'm looking for some pointers in integrating sugarCRM with a live database.

I have a progress database (OpenEdge) that contains all customer data. Which also would mirror the data we're trying to get into SugarCRM.

What is the best way to have sugarCRM duplicate, replicate, or access the data on a different database?

This is no small job and really depends on how fresh you want your data to be and it you plan to update that data in both databases.

If you do then none of your options will work. You will have to write some sort of system that syncs the data at retrieve and save times in SugarCRM or the other app. Even then you will have to contend with parts of SugarCRM that bypass the retrieve function like reports.

If SugarCRM can lag behind the other app then I would write a job to run at night to update the data.

The first two options are almost the same, the second one would be the real way to go (if your data doesnt have to be fresh) but you might have to do it in small chunks or all at night.

The last option (accessing the data directly from the other database) would be a massive job unless the data schema of both apps are the same (very improbable).
