I can create a lead under an opportunity but I am unable create a lead and assign it to an oportunity (no choice available) .. is there any logic behing it?

The logic is: You create an Opportunity and assign it with a Lead only when you Convert a Lead into a Contact and also create an Account and an Opportunity.

Sorry Andre - but I could not follow your logic..
I have an opportunity, the call comes in and I have quickly used shortcut to create a lead. Now I need to assign that lead to opportunity? what am I missing ?
If you need to edit the Lead and assign an Opportunity so you need to:
1. Create an extended vardefs for Leads to add a non-db relate field (assigned_opportunity_name) which refers to existing field opportunity_id.
Then add this field into DetailView and EditView.
You need some php and SugarCRM programming skills to accomplish such task.
