Lost custom layouts in upgrade to 4.0

I was upgrading from 3.5.1e to 4.0. I had about 20 custom fields that I added and put on different layouts, e.g. Accounts - Edit view, Accounts - Detail view, Accounts - List view, Contacts - Edit view, Contacts - Detail view. After upgrading I lost all my customization of the layouts. I did the Rebuild Relationships and Rebuild Extensions but this didn't bring back the layouts. I then did Upgrade Custom Labels. This at least found all my custom fields. So I had to re-do all my custom layouts by adding my custom fields back to the layouts. Fortunately all the data was retained so once I added the fields back to the layouts the data showed up. Just wanted to let people know what to expect.

I did the same upgrade last week and have the same issues.

General question on this topic: Does it work to simply copy back in the old *.html files to the module folder, so that we don't have through all the hassle of customizing the layout again?

I actually tried it with the "Cases" views this morning and it appears to be working, but I don't know if I'm missing some integral link that will make me regret it later. So, I know it seems to work at one level, but what don't I see?

I'd appreciate very much hearing any stern warnings that anyone might be able to share.
