Module upload issues

Is there anybody who knows about installing modules?

I get error codes left, right & centre. Everything seems to work fine apart from installing modules. I am used to Joomla, even upto 1.5, bridges between CB and Forums, know a little bit about php - I am stuck. Honest.

It is a simple, very simple module, created within 5.0. Errors messages seem to be related to CMOD failures.
Having looked at those - it is unlikely that that would be the issue - may be in one or two instances.
Before I CMOD every file to 777 and work my way backwards, is there anybody who:

1: May be can guide me in the right direction before too late?
2. Ask if I have followed the correct procedure? - And if not - put me in the right direction?

I understand we are not (at this stage) super paying members - but we will - providing this get's sorted. That is my job.

Anybody who can guide a bit?
