    Default Moving to PHP 5.1

    Hi All,

We are strongly considering using PHP 5.1 as the minimum requirement for Sugar 5.1. This means that all customers and community members will have to move to PHP 5.1 from older versions. There are tremendous advantage if we migrate. A few are listed below:

    1. PHP 4.0 series will be EOL-ed sooner or later
    2. We can take advantage of advanced OO features in PHP 5.0
    3. Simpler code, better performance, easier to extend and less dependency third party components.
    4.And also cleaner APIs

Please share your thoughts on this move .

    Thanks
    Manoj

I think it's a great idea. We made the move for most of our clients some time ago. We wanted to get it done before we were forced to.

We would welcome the improvements that could be gained.

I would suggest you make the decision soon, and advertise the heck out of it.

    I vote yes!

We're running php5.1 here so that's cool with us. It would be interesting to know if there are stats on the installed instances' platforms and whether they are self hosted or by 3rd parties. The latter would cause the most consternation if they are staying with php4 (though that is soon becoming unsupported).

We are currently running PHP 5.2.5. It would be great to take full advantage of benefits associated with running 5.1 and above. I vote yes as well. It is time to leave PHP 4 behind.

Thumbs up Re: Moving to PHP 5.1

Any chance we can get closer to the roots of php is a great leap forward in the right direction to any developer It's mostly your unmanaged customers that would be the major player in this game. A business decision that will have to be made for better or worse...

    ...two thumbs up!

Anything that makes Sugar simpler, easier to extend, faster, etc. is a good thing in my book. I have been using 5.x at my company since we switch to it last year. I would watch out for 5.1.6 (bad release), but other than that I've been extremely happy with it.

One thing though, when you guys switch...PLEASE take the time either before or during your implementations to write up API documentation and references, or document the code well enough that you can use an automated tool like PHPDoc to output the in-code documentation.

I would compare your question with "let's do an application only for Vista" ...

I don't entirely agree. Granted Win 98 was a decent OS and probably one of the best in the Windows line, but does anyone support it anymore? Nope. And 5.x is no where the crap that Vista is from a metaphorical standpoint.

Despite that, I see your point. However, PHP 5 offers some nice advancements over 4...one of which is the opportunity to clean up bad code and 'ingenious' workarounds (aka hacks) in 4. From a long-time programmer, I welcome it. I don't like crappy code, mine or anyone else's. If I have a better tool and a better language that helps me stay efficient while producing quality code, I consider that a good thing.

Besides, as long as PHP 5 has been out, it's probably time that people should consider updating their code. If they haven't been thinking about it already, or done so already, their project or software is probably checking out the graveyard for a nice quite home.
