Default Newbie Question: Community Edition vs. Professional On-Demand

Hello. Brand new to Sugar. I'm trying to undertstand the difference between the Community Edition vs. the Professional On-Demand version of SugarCRM.

Can someone point me to a link that would describe the differences? Or perhaps someone could briefly summarize here. I'm trying to understand if there are significant functionality differences or is it largely an issue of how it gets hosted?

I need a CRM starting out for about 5 users. As I understand it, the Pro On-Demand is a minimum of $200/month (5 users x $40). If I use the Community Edition then I can put it on my own hosted server, which of course I then pay for that hosting...so, at least starting out, it seems that the costs might be about equal.

I am not a programmer/developer, so can't imagine that initially I would actually be doing anything with the actual code. However, in either version I can envision wanting to make changes to fields, screen layouts, etc.

Thank you to anyone who can briefly summarize the various flavors of Sugar or can suggest which way to go.

    Cheers,

    Hi there,

Here are a few links to get you started:

With Sugar Professional and Sugar Enterprise, you have the option to have Sugar host your installation or you can host it yourself.

    Hello,
I followed the link that you posted to the webpage describing the difference between the editions, but it did not include the community edition. Is the community edition the same as Sugar Express, the only difference being the hosting server?

Yes, Community Edition and Sugar Express are for the most part functionally the same, though Express has a few additional items (the Word and Outlook and Excel and Thunderbird plug-ins, some Sugar technical support cases, the ability to have the software hosted with us versus you having to host it yourself are notable examples).

I'm not a Sugar sales expert, but it's also my understanding that the biggest difference between Community and everything else is the number of included modules. CE has a great number of modules but the other editiions have a few more. You'll have to look them up to see if they are critical to you. I, just like you, run a small installation, so for me the CE version is perfect and has a great deal of functionality.

The difference between CE and paid for versions can be closed rapidly using sugarforge modules.

The paid for versions are not open source. They are conventional proprietary software offerings.

    Nothing wrong with that except:

It seems that the Sugar Express Edition does not include the Workflow module, can someone please confirm this?

SugarExpress is no longer offered for sale. It did not have the Workflow functionality, to answer your question. Workflow capabilities are available in Sugar Professional and Enterprise editions.
