Hi evereyone,
I'd like to know the cost to purchase the open source code for SugarCRM software, and in the future, in case I install it on my server, do we still need to pay a licence fee or is it then free of charge?
thanks in advance

Your cost is per named user and will vary depending on the version you choose to go with. The community edition is the only one that is completely free.
The professional and enterprise editions will both require a yearly renewal.

Open Source code is free of charge;
you can use it, modify it and release your modifications under the GNU GPL3 (see the GPL3.txt attachment)
What do you think the cookie monster eats ?
Yes, the source is available to anyone and everyone regardless of which edition you use, but your usage of the application is not free is you are using Pro or Enterprise. Thus my point that costs will vary based on the edition to be used.

You are right Angel,
the source is available for Sugar CE, Professional and Enterprise.
But I think that even if you pay the annual fee for Sugar Professional, you can use it and modify it, but you cannot redistribute it.
That's why I think the only Open Source version is the Community Edition.
Am I mistaken?
What do you think the cookie monster eats ?
No, you are not mistaken, although, I think the original poster is more concerned about his on going costs of using the software.

Hi DragonflyMaster and Angel -Originally Posted by DragonflyMaster
You are both correct. The Community Edition is the only edition licensed under an open source license (GPLv3).
The Professional and Enterprise editions are licensed under an annual subscription agreement which means that to use the software, you have to keep your annual subscription current. However, you do get all of the source code to the Professional and Enterprise editions and are of course allowed to make modifications. You just can't redistribute those modifications.

As noted above by Dragonflymaster and Angel, there are three editions of SugarCRM. The Community Edition is free to download, free to use, free to modify and free to redistribute. It is licensed under the GPLv3 open source license. The Professional and Enterprise editions are licensed under an annual subscription agreement.
You will find a functional comparision of the three editions and pricing here in the sugarcrm.com website.
Basically the pricing is per user, per year. You can also choose your deployment option.
If you choose to run the software yourself on your own hardware, you pick the On-Site deployment option. If you want us to run the software for you and including all of the backup, failover, performance and maintenance services you would expect with Software-as-a-Service, then you would go with the On Demand deployment option. The On Demand option costs more than the On Site option since we run the data center for you and provide all the other services as well.
I also suggest reading through our Sales FAQ's here. They give a great overview of what it means to become a customer of SugarCRM.

Thanks and I am sorry for the delay. I read all posts that you wrote here and it helped me in my decision. In fact I am already exchanging emails with a guy from the sales department of SugarCRM and I've got very interested in the Sugar PRO On site version since I want to take control of the application and make changes in the application.
Thanks
On a similar topic does anyone know of a way to obtain a license for simply 1 user?
I would love to have a copy of the Pro version (for many reasons) but find the 5 users minimum means I am unable to afford it as this is simply not viable. I dont wish to use the on demand version as I want to play with the code.
Is my option simply to use the CE edition and try to add modules that offer similar functionality to the Pro version. I am sure others have similar requests.
