This raises a good point. There are generally accepted standards for telephone number database display such that you have country code, area code and the actual number. Around Europe there are different ways of laying out the actual number such as in pairs or fours or three and four etc but basically the important items to split out are the area code and country code. Outlook and Act! for example make use of this feature and have a built in feature which works out the layout based on the country code you have entered. It is worth pointing out that even in one country (e.g. UK) there can be many varieties of layout. London is now 020 and not 0207 or 0208 as some people think, and then 4 plus 4 eg 020 7234 5678. Internationally this is written as +44 (0)20 7234 5678. This also helps to ensure your pda/cell doesn't have a hissy fit when you move your numbers over. Also worht pointing out that it is not unusual for area codes to change and a separate field for area code helps make changes more straightforward.
As an Open-Source project and standards based (I hope) This would be a useful enhancement for Sugar to consider
