Populate fields before sending email

Hi,

I have created an email template with several fields.

I want to populate the fields before sending the email so that I can check everything is correct before the email is sent. So instead of showing "Dear $contact_first_name" it shows "Dear John..."

I tried to search for this, but couldn't find anything so forgive me if this has been asked before.

The only way I can think to do this would be to send it to yourself first as the email is populated at send time. I am not even sure of that because of you change the email address in the TO field I think you break the link back to the contact.

There is a feature request for this (#33027) so the product team already is aware of the issue but I cant really think of any way to do it currently.
