Preventing Duplicate Contacts, Leads, & Targets

Hi,
I have been looking at DevToolkit and working to understand how to prevent duplicate contacts, leads, and targets from being created. I would like this to be checked by requiring a unique email address. If someone tries to import a lead/target/contact with an email address that already exists, it should fail.

Is this possible? Do I need to write code to make this possible?

Unique Fields plugin in DevToolKit doesn´t support unique email address.
It only support built in and custom fields.
It would be required to write some additional code on plugin to deal with that.
