Problem working with files attached under history

I am struggling with files that are attached under the history tab.
Over the course of the last few months and some "upgraded safe" programming we hired out, it seems that some of the attached files are missing or currupt.

I've figured out that the files are stored in the /cache/upload folder with a system assigned file name.

The question is, can I simply go to one of my backups, and copy the files from the /cache/upload folder into the current production /cache/upload folder?

It would seem to me that the link in the db should still contain that file name and should open it without any issue.

We were running CE 5.1.0b

I've looked through the forums and wikis and can't find much on this topic.
Any insight into the file mgmt system would be appreciated.

Yes, you can. Just make sure that it's the physical files and not the db. Make an additional copy of the db just in case...
Sorry - I meant of course the entire system (db and Sugar directory)
