Could someone please explain to me the purpose of creating a project in the CRM?

A good question!!
Projects are useful for pieces of work that are more complex than a Task.
So, with a task such as "Prepare a Proposal", you can set a start date and an end date. There's only one piece of work - to prepare the proposal.
Projects on the other hand might be used for something like preparing for an exhibition where there are a number of tasks such as:
1. get quotes for stand
2. choose supplier
3. get marketing materials
4. send invites to customers
5. follw up invites.
6. sign off on stand
7. arrange shipping
With projects you can encapsulate all of these tasks within the Project "Prepare for exhibition" and give each individual task a start and end date and if required assign them to other people.
It's not a replacement for something like Microsoft Project - you can't do Critical Path Analsysi or produce Gantt charts .... but for relatively simple projects ... it has a place.

I'm using Projects to keep my SugarCRM implementation on track. MS Project is overkill and this works perfectly - until I screw up the implementation and all of my project records go away![]()
