relate field - how to relate to something other than "Name"

I have two questions.
I have a new module and I want to display a drop down field of available "Instructors" which are located in a second module along with their "Status". These are the only 2 fields in that second module.
I am finding that the relate seems to default to a field "Name".
I want to relate to the "Instructor" field in that second module.

Secondly, I only want to display in my fist module's drop down list only those "instructors" who have a "status" of 'active'.

I am guessing code is going to be required here to try to accomplish these two tasks?

Struggled with this for a couple of days and not made any headway.
Can anybody help with some pointers as to how to set up a "Relate" field to a field in another module and to have it point to a field in that module other than the default "Name" field..
