Relationship recording

What my pilot users would like to do (so we are fairly new to Sugar & CRM for that matter) is record relationships between people that go beyond the "Reports to" and associated user items.

Now I can see that with meetings, you can record an association between a group of people, and Notes allow a Contact to be associated with another Contact, Lead or Account, via the related to.

However what would be nice is a Relationship entity that would allow an arbitary number of "people", that is Leads, Contacts, Users, Employees to be linked together.

This would allow groupings of people by for example:
- interest
- organisation
- intermediaries - so we are a law firm, knowing who people use as Surveyors is useful and who the surveyors act for

Has anyone done this as an extension?

Notes & Meetings provide the basics and with good conventions, you could use them as a subsititure.
