Default Results of 'Campaigns' in Contacts tab

(Helping the local Campaign For The Arts get Sugar-ized on a hosted 4.51 Open Source version)

In the Contacts main tab for an individual, Campaigns sub-panel is visible.
Clicking that brings up a list of campaigns. So far, duh.

Clicking a Campaign name adds that Campaign to the sub-panel for that contact.
    What does that do?

Doesn't appear to add the Contact to Target List(s). Nor does it add them as a standalone member of the campaign.
The Activity Type says 'Message Sent/Attempted" - whether it's an email campaign or not.

Inquiring minds want to know...what's the Campaigns sub-panel there for?

    Thanks in advance
    Matthew

    uuuummmmmmmmmmmmm nothing.

That subpanel is there to list out activities from a campaign that involved that contact, the select button should not be there. That is a read-only subpanel. I looked and that button is still there in 5.0. I will submit a bug report for it.

Currently the subpanel for campaigns allows a misc. contact or lead to be included in the campaign as "Mark as Sent".

This is probably only useful because of existing bugs and allows a work around.

I still believe that campaigns should be revisited and allow Targets, Leads, Contacts to be manually marked as being in one stage or another of a campaign.

The stages could be canned e.g. {Sent, Bounced (Bad Address), Opted Out, Converted, Failure, Success} or whatever.

The point is users should have control over the stage the target/lead/contact is in the campaign.

For those of us using non-email campaign the current implementation is next to useless since the tracking features are only available in email ... so what's the point.

I think simply hiding the select campaign button without revisiting the campaign workflow model is hiding the larger problem and removing the manual workaround for when "Mark as Sent" does not work,
