    Default safe mode

    For an older version of Sugar I was able to use it at a hosting company that doesn't allow safe mode to be turned off. Now, with 3.5.1, I can't get past the installer. I know there was some restrictions when safe mode was on but everything worked fine as long as you don't try to do customizations though the Sugar interface. Is there any way around the safe mode restrictions?

    Any update on this? I, too, am with an ISP who is very adamantly against turning safe_mode off. A workaround would be great, even if it does cripple functionality.

    Well, no help from Sugar, I got it to work with my ISP with Safe Mode on. Basically, I disabled the check in the installer and set up the file system permissions and that was about it. I had some problems logging in but that was because of the version of MySQL and authentication problems.

    I've been able to add contacts and whatnot just fine. I haven't tried to change the layout of anything but I suspect that will work because I have the file permissions set correctly.

    I'm not sure why Sugar would even require Safe Mode off and am disappointed they are going that route.

    Many thanks...I didn't want to bypass the check without knowing if there would be a host of other problems to resolve as well...I'll give it a try as you've done.

    Unless I changed the permissions in all folders to 777 the upgrade wizard fails for sure. I first installed 3.5.1 and then tried to patch it to 3.5.1a using the upgrade wizard but it didn't work because of file permission errors. As an experiment I copied the sugar folder to a sugarTest folder and changed the file permissions to 777 and the upgrade worked fine (except an error about "Touch" that I should have noted). So, even the upgrade wizzard doesn't need safe mode (just scary file permisions).

    I talked more to support at my ISP (who knows more about safe mode than any of us could hope) and he said about the only thing you would "need" safe mode for was to launch external applications (for converting images and stuff like that).

    Also, only in the installer is this line:
    set_time_limit(90)
    That relies on safe mode. Changing that to:
    @set_time_limit(90)
    Will have the effect of not giving those who have safe mode on a warning message while still setting the timeout for those with safe mode off.
