Software to install?

I'm new to Sugar and I'm currently reviewing CRM platforms for my small business operations. I read in the user documentation that Sugar requires the download and installation of some software. Is for the admin side only, or the client/user too? Also, do we need our own databases to store the data? My understanding was that everything would be handled on the web...

The software would typically be installed on the server and the data would be stored in an SQL server, either on the same machine or another of your liking. Nothing needs to be installed on the workstations, as the users would access the application via their web browser as they do any other web site.

Now, that's assuming that you choose to go the route of "On Premise."

If you go the "On Demand" route, you can skip the installation process on the server. You instead would be provided with a link on a server that you neither control nor own. You are merely paying for the right to use Sugar and store data on that server.

When you purchase Sugar Professional, you have the option to have your CRM hosted by Sugar or you can choose to host it yourself. If you choose the former option, there is no software to install, you simply access it by using your web browser.
