Default SugarCRM as an Alumni Database?

Has anyone used SugarCRM as a method to keep track of group memberships? I am specifically looking at a college alumni group which has about 800-1000 mailing addresses for alumni of my fraternity.

I was hoping to use SugarCRM as a secured online stash of their contact info and i'd like to do more, like ability to have them update their own data and print out mailing labels, etc. Just curious if anybody has done this and has suggestions for plug-ins or configurations that might help with the community edition.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    Yes, why not?

You can hold all the member data in SugarCRM. You can build some portal pages which access the stored data by SOAP or REST.
Even the self-administration of the memebr data is possible with such a SOAP or REST Interface, I did that for a privat music community...
