+1, something needs to be done to tone it down a bit.
I sometimes have to cycle through about 4 - 5 to get one that I can read because it is so aggressive. Sometimes the text is upside down, uses accents, etc.
I am expecting to one day ask me to type in the weird symbol Prince used for his name some years back.

I know your concern regarding bots, but it is also true that captcha is not a happy thing. If it can be toned down a bit, that's a big help
