Like many customers who were using SugarCRM 4.2 we found there were some performance issues. We managed to optimise our system to get < 1.5 second response times, however, this 1.5 second response plus the 1-2 second rendering time makes SugarCRM sluggish, especially if it is replacing a simple 16-bit app that has an essentially instance response.
Our first significant speed improvement was to move from a Windows server to a Linux server. Although the servers were approximately the same spec, the linux server was able to process MYSQL approximately twice as fast. As most pages in 4.2 generated 600 sql requests this was one of the main factors in the slow speed.
Upgrading to version 5.0 saw some additional improvements in speed, I have not tested, but I am guessing due to the new database structure less commands are run, or the javascript has been improved to run faster. Either way there was a small but noticeable increase in speed.
However, I have recently installed all the latest browsers, and found that Opera produces a dramatic speed improvement. Although FF3 is definitely faster than FF2, Opera is blisteringly fast, with near instant response. The time from click to full screen render in most instances is 0.6 seconds or less.
