Question Help needed SugarCRM v. Salesforce.com

I am a computer consultant and one of my clients asked me for my recommendation for a CRM package. Not knowing the different CRMs available, I asked around and a friend refered me to SugarCRM. My client looked at the demo and theough great this will do everything we need it to do. They then told all of the other CRM vendors that they were looking very closely at SugarCRM. Understandably, my clients not being too technology savey forwarded an email from Salesforce.com asking me to comment on the email. Not having used either CRM package I decided to ask for everyones opinion.

Here is a copy of an email from Salesforce.com SugarCRM's competitor.

Sorry but we don't allow emails to be posted that emanate from our esteemed competitors. We consider these emails private correspondence. Feel free to post it on other blogs/forums on non-Sugar-owned sites, just not here.

We do encourage vibrant discussion on this topic overall and, hence, the thread lives on.

And there are more hidden costs to sugar: It's poor quality. The software has more bugs than you can enumerate. New releases break as many things they fix. They spend more time breathing their own exhaust ("we are the world's leading provider...yada yada...") than producing quality software.

The fact is that their sole strategy is to plagiarize salesforce.com and sell it for a lower cost per seat. But, as you well point out, their TCO is higher even before you add the costs I refer to related to defective software.

rkoffler has a point. The codebase is not the best aspect of Sugar.
But don't let that distract you. Out of the box, the functionality and performance of Sugar is quite good, and the interface is even better: it's excellent. I'm not sure about the codebase of competitors, I never thoroughly looked into it.

If you need Sugar as you say it (no major adjustments, the functionality in the demo is everything you need) then you should go Sugar. If you're a big hospital looking for a complete CRM solution, look somewhere else (and bring your wallet) .
