Default Is SugarCRM worth to customized into non-sales related system?

    Greeting,

hope you guys can provide me some idea. I found the admin > Module Builder is really cool!
It allows you to create new records/tables, fields and editing template without going through the code.

But recently i have a study, what if i wanna build a "School management system"
It include "Student", "Teacher" and some "courses", "fee" "school result" which is totally nothing to do with "lead", "sales", "marketing" and so on.

So my question is, is it worth to use SugarCRM and remove all the standard feature, then rebuild the "teacher", "student" module using Module Builder?
Will we have any impact in future?

    Thanks for your idea

it's possible .... crm is NOT just about sales and sugarcrm is built on an enterprise class database and toolset that would allow you to do much of what you seek to do

Hi Thanks for the reply Sugar Hero.
So, is it worth to use SugarCRM if it's just a small student-Teacher system? or rather go for those ready-made framework like Symphon, CakePHP?

To best evaluate this, I would suggest you make a list of Sugar features that you would use.

In my opinion, making such a drastic revision would be a mistake. Sugar is not for everything. I agree it's much more than just a sales tool, but it's not an application framework for system development. Using the wrong tool will always result in a bad solution.

Sapmin is correct .... if you wanted to build a warehouse management system ... you wouldn't start with sugarcrm.

But by the sounds of things, you need to build a relationship management solution focused on a vertical requirement and sugarcrm is a very good choice and a very good starting point.

I use sugar in a small university with teachers and students, courses and so on.
I use it because it fits some of the needs, and the things i dont need i do not use. For the missing things i use modulebuilder and some custom code, but once you are a bit experienced its really nice.

I use the contacts module for our students, leads for leads , and my own modules courses, teacher, exams, rates ...

    It works quite nice.

I also have built a complete course management system for a client in Sugar
It includes creating and monitoriing courses, classes, teachers and students plus
gantt charts and Zuckerreports integrated. One of the most valuable things is to understand
both your data model and that of Sugars to maximise use of what already exists in the vanilla Sugar system.

In contrast to saying it is possible, I would thoroughly recommend Sugar for this purpose!

I also use sugarcrm for a different pupose than just as a sales tool. We use it for the backend of a MLM system. Offcourse we have a sales proces, but added quite efw functionality through the module builder and integrated it with Joomla, so our members have acces to the information they need. Our employees are the only ones with the sugar interface.

Moodle http://moodle.org/ is the answer to your question for a good open source School Management System.
