Default Tracking source of a lead..

This is a "general use" question.

So, let's say I get leads in different ways:

    1. A vendor partner (we may be a VAR) submits a leads list to us.

    2. An Internet user submits info on a form.

    3. A friend calls and says "help this company".

I want to keep as much data as possible so, long-term, I can track how I best get leads.

Okay, so for #1 I import the leads and we fill in:

    Lead Source: Partner
    Referred By: partner-company-name
Lead Source Description: includes info on how the lead was generated for our partner (e.g., white paper, website)

For #2 we use Lead Source: Web site

How can we vary on #2? What if we have a contact form and another form for a white paper? How should we best track that?

And I suppose for #3 we just do that on a case by case basis and use Referred-By consistently.

    Thoughts?

Maybe you can add a field "ways" that you add in your vendor partner leads list and in your web form.

Another option would be to use "Campaign", setting up different campaigns for different sources, ways and other criteria.

    Yeah, that is an option.

One problem I am having that is related is that I do an Leads.. Import and it only lets you affect the Lead record. If I could also assign a Lead to a Campaign etc. that would be nice.

I know there are module that let you do fancier things with imports. I'll have to check that out.
