Default Upgrade from open source edition to professional edition

    Hi,

we are thinking about implementing SugarCRM after being majorly disappointed by NetSuite and its lack of technical support and customer service. I was wondering if it is possible to implement the open source edition and customize it to our needs and then at a later point upgrade to the professional edition.

If so is that going to be accompanied by major issues or a very difficult task or not? Any recommendations and insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards, Christian

This is definitely a supported upgrade path. Sugar seems to use the OS version in order to build the community and to allow free trial periods. When you do decide to upgrade to pro it is an easy process because it is the same codebase with some editions. In fact if you look in the OS code you can see big gaps, the pro code just gets 'pasted' into these gaps.

Their is a definate upgrade path from the stock SugarCRM Open Source to the Professional. The one exception is your modifications to SugarCRM may be lost if they are doen outside of the studio. you will have to manually merge the changes for the cusomizations during the upgrade. There is a lot of core functionality added to the Pro and Enterprise versions. The best Being teams. ad-hoc reports and Quotes.

Yes there is a supported upgrade path. When you buy Professional you get access to the upgrade ptach. Regarding customizations you definitely have to to watch out. It can be very tricky. So when you start it depends if you have the time for trial and error or not.

Thanks for the feedbacxk on this matter. THe customizations are exactly what I was worried about in the upgrade process since I expect it to take a while until everything is exactly the way we want it to be and of course it would be crucial not to loose the customization that were made during the implementation phase on the open source edition.

Same applies for the data but I guess that the data won't be a problem. Are there any documents that descrive how to preserve those customizations or if some will be lost at least a detailed excplanation of the customizations that will be affected?

    Thanks, Christian
