Default user 'report to' setting and sharing contact/accounts

While setting up users I had assumed that the 'report to' setting would pass through account and contact permisions. For example, if sale person A is the owner of account A, I though that assigning sales person A to manager B using report to would allow the manager to see the sales persons items, even if the manager's role was assigned to owner under accounts.

In other words, I assumed that 'reports to' passed on ownership, and it appears that it does not.

So, two questiosn: 1. what does the 'report to' setting actually do?
    2. is there a way to have a manager login have access to accounts that belong to sales people assigned to them, but no one else?

Reports to is used to build views of corporate hierarchies and has no bearing on sugar permissions.

You should investigate some of the Teams modules in SUgarforge for your manager/subordinates data permissions issues

While changing one of my user's "report to " field I ran into a long error message:

"The system detected a reporting loop. A user cannot report to themselves, nor can any of their managers report to them.

Please click the browser back button and fix the error."

This happened when I logged in as admin, and the message doesn't seem to make any sense as there should not be a reporting loop. Is there any way make the "report to " field blank ? Maybe setting a value inside the user's record in mysql ?

    Thanks.
