    Default WAMP or LAMP?

In the process of setting up sugar and need to decide which way to go. I have very little linux experince and or skills. On the other hand windows is 2nd nature. I do support a unix server that really requires little or no support. Is my unix box more stable due to the fact that I can't mess with it
In either case i will use the bitrock, spike or rbuilder install.
    Thoughts?

I personally would use linux instead of windows only because I'm more comfortable with Linux. You should probably use what you're comfortable with as you'll be the one responsible for maintaining it. Now, if you wanted to learn Linux, this would probably be a good way to get involved.

I've never used one of the installers so I can't help you on that.

I would vote LAMP, although I have a development install on a WAMP stack as well (I use XAMPP myself). I believe that the statement "my unix box more stable due to the fact that I can't mess with it " is true.

I really do want to become more Linux proficient. In the case of the sugar box it will be on the outside of the network and I'm concerned my limited knowledge will lead to security vulnerabilities. I could always pay a white hat hacker to see where my issues lie and help tighten things up. Any volunteers?

Here is a security document for SugarCRM and Linux.

Security of the MySQL database basically boils down to two things.

    Firewall

Block port 3306 (or whatever port you designate as the MySQL port, 3306 being the default)

    Password Access

Set up a user password to access the database. Most people use a single login ID for their MySQL database which is fine as long as a password is setup.
Here is the document that I used to secure my databases.

I'm going to advice going with a Spike install first, learning about the tools, sugar, apache, and php, and if you don't have a preference for internal versus external, migrate over to a good provider like siteground.com. They are pretty security saavy, and are very helpful. You'll learn the ins and outs of cron jobs and ip address management at this step.

    Just my two cents.
