What to do with dead targets?

I'm just getting started with using targets to track potential customers in a phone campaign. When I call a target and find that they are not qualified or permanently not interested, I would like to have a way to mark them as such so that we do not call them again. However, I don't see any way to do this out of the box without upgrading the target to a lead - which seems kinda counterintuitive?

Any advice on best practices in this area would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can create a check box "is_dead" and add this checkbox to search form.
So you can teach users to always set this checkbox checked on search form the way dead Prospects are never displayed on listview.
