Can anyone remember what it was like to be a newbie and not know JACK about Sugar? How long did it take to get comfortable with it?

It does take some time. I've been intensenly at it for the past 3 weeks and I am still learning.

Having a good php knowledge, know to use grep helps a lot and read this forum and http://sugarcubed.multi.com/ helps a lot.

Thanks. You mentioned "grep". So obviously Sugar runs on Unix/Linux. Does it also run on Windows?

I can see how PHP knowledge would be required to modify/enhance Sugar, but is it required if I just want to install/run as-is?

    thanks again,
    Brent

It's not too bad. I was a Sugar AND PHP noob and it wasn't that bad to handle most of the simple stuff. Took a few weeks to understand how it works and to get a general understanding of the architecture so you know where to look to fix things.
