Why "required" fields?

(Bad terminology, that "First Name" and "Last Name" - it assumes particular cultures. "Surname" and "Given Name" would be better!)

We are evaluating the latest OS version of SugarCRM. One of the sales dudes is asking if we can turn off the requirement for a Last Name on contact (and other) records. It's the nature of the business, most contacts are transient so we use other information. Of we have just a first name.

Is there a way to turn this off? I assumed that this might be a key field for sorting, but would that necessarily mean that content was absolutely required?

Sure, look at the vardefs file and maybe field_arrays (required_fields).

Also, remove the little red dot from the template.
