    Talking windows vs Linux

I have gotten Sugar working on Linux about 30-50 times with very little trouble. I finally thought I'd set up a testbed at home to try to learn & document some the the code (and to give my wife a good reason to put on the divorce papers). Of course this means installing it under windows (I am trying to use the zend debugger to help me out). I have installed it under at least a dozen variations of apache/php/mysql and finally I think I have it working, but only by brute force (installing it in linux and transferring the databases and code by hand).... Windows Sucks, just in case anyone was unsure....

I'm sure you've installed it on an unclean PC and the same PC is in the same time client and server.
    It's not fair.
Yes Windows isn't as good as linux for php/mysql hostings, but it doesn't suck that much.
Furthermore this is a troll topic
    Doh !

Not sure what a troll topic is, but your probably right.... that said, how can windows be anything but unclean? I admit, if I had installed the OS then a WAMP stack then the CRM it may have worked, but who can do that?

I love windows, don't get me wrong, but anyone using it to serve web pages is a fool (imho).

    Hi kbrill,

I don't now why you having the issues you mentioned but I'm doing most of the development on my (very unclean) Windows laptop. I have not experienced any problems running several php apps (incl. Sugar) , Apache and MySQL on the same machine. Could it be that you've missed some small setting that might affect whole environment?

Though I have configured it on windows and made it "kinda work" I absolutely agree that linux is much better host for php/mysql, linux is just clean and logical and admin-friendly Well, user-friendly too

the more, I wonder even why they choose it at all

Sometimes you don't have the choice. We bought a Dell PC to make it a Linux server, but Linux and SATA...
I had to make it run under WinXP Pro. At least I have Terminal Server
    Doh !

Not sure what your problem is with Dell, Linux, and SATA is, we're running Sugar on a Dell SC430 with a SATA disk and SuSE Linux without any problems.

One issue we have with windows is that unless you correctly configure it the task scheduler will make the process with focus have the highest priority, and therefore anyone on a terminal services session will slow down the LAMP stack running as a service.

I don't know. It worked on two others PC, but this one...
I tried 3 distributions : debian, fedora core and ubuntu.
None of these have been able to detect the hard drives
    Doh !

    Have a go a running through the following checklist;

    1) Is the BIOS up to date (check the dell support site).
    2) Does the drive register in the BIOS.
    3) Have you run the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic disk to verify the disk is OK.

If that all checks out then try searching the web for machine specific tips (e.g. search for "Dell SC430 SuSE Linux install"), you may find there are some installer switches you need.
