Default Writable Modules Sub-Directories and Files - Not Writeable

I get this problem during installation:

Writable Modules Sub-Directories and Files - Not Writeable

I have tried all night to no avail - CHMOD every directory to 777 - one by one as I do not have shell access, and it still didnt let me continue the installation. What have I missed here? Please help, somebody?

Not sure if this helps, but are you chmodding recursively? Also, I trick I learnt is that I often chmod the directories underneath but sometimes forget the actual Modules directory itself.
    Thanks Shannon
