5.0.0b: Calls - duration can't be zero anymore? Why?

Someone made a change in 5.0.0b such that when you enter a Call record it won't save unless the duration is something other than zero. It was not like this in 4.x or 5.a. Is there a way to un-do that... not make it a required field?

In /modules/Calls/metadata/editviewdefs.php line #107 the javascript funktion isValidDuration() is defined.
Just change it to yours needs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when you change the code in Sugar, the next time there is a major patch or upgrade it could/will get wiped out, right?

YES, it is.
SO if you chnage the code, you should create an exact change documentation to find all patches you made by yourself.
